If you see something you like, figure out if it's something you can do on your own? In some cruise ports, I hire a taxi, in others I hire a local guide that I connected with before the trip. Most of the time, I walk and take local public transportation to get around. Messina isn't one of Sicily's most interesting cities, so I'd look for an excursion taking you elsewhere. Where to choose would depend on what type of sightseeing you want to do. There are trains running from Messina toward Cefalu and Palermo (to the west) and toward Taormina and Catania (to the south).

Travel Talks: Mediterranean Cruise Ports

It's possible, technically, to do the entire cruise with no extra expenses on board, but extras are enticing. They need to make money, and there's not much profit in the base cost of a trip. ♪♪ As we make our way toward Rome, let's consider how to stay within your budget while on the ship. With everyone back on board, it's time to haul anchor and sail away. And the harbor-front is the perfect place to enjoy a final drink on the Riviera. Back on the train, I'm enjoying my independence, my baguette avec fromage , and amazing Riviera scenery.

♪♪ [ Cheers and applause ] ♪♪ [ Cheers and applause ] ♪♪ The captain advised being up early to enjoy the entry to the Grand Harbor of Malta. By mid-day, we're back in Naples, free to see things far from the cruise crowds. While we could make a deal here on the spot for our sightseeing needs, I've made arrangements in advance. In ports like Naples, the scene can feel aggressive. Here in Naples, the cruise terminal is right down town.

[15] The fisherman’s harbor of Marsaxlokk, a favorite with visitors, is home to a vast fleet of typically Maltese fishing boats. While Marsaxlokk has a fine main square and church, the action is along the harbor — especially on a Sunday, when it’s all about fish. Tradition says that the shape of the boats goes back eight centuries before Christ to when Malta was a Phoenician colony, and the colors indicate the fisherman’s home village. [5] Of the many cultures that shaped it, perhaps most obvious is the 150 years Malta was part of the British Empire. In World War II, it was a key Allied naval base and, as it suffered horrible bomb damage by German planes, much of it has been rebuilt in recent years. The mighty harbor survived and you can tour it in a little boat called a “dgħajsa” (a Maltese gondola).

I disagree that Naples has little to offer aside from Archaeological Museum. It is a large, bustling city with many interesting sights. I haven't been to the other two ports but would not rate them as high as these four from what I have read. While we've enjoyed a quick look at a selection of Mediterranean ports, there are plenty more. Whether that's touring ancient sites in Greece, crossing off some of those "must see" highlights in Italy or France, or just relaxing on the beach of your dreams. Whether you took the cruise excursion, or hopped a donkey, or just had lunch in port, you'll take home unforgettable memories.

Six cruises and I have only done one cruise ship excurision,, all the other times I got ideas and directions off of cruisecritics other forum memembers.. Cruise ship excursion to similar would have been like 50 or more dollars a head! Also, if you can't find a tour company, Viator.com will find you a tour, we have had great success with them booking shore excursions. The first time we were novices and booked everything through the cruise line. In the places where Rick steve has books we have used guides he has recomended and arranged a private tour.

We can remove the first video in the list to add this one. But first, we need you to sign in to PBS using one of the services below. In order to film people up close (and respect their privacy), I had to meet them first and make friends. That was no problem on the ship — I had plenty of new friends to dance with.

Insinuating that we're envious of not being on a Magic Kingdom cruise ourselves, that ship's thunderous horn gloats to the tune of "When You Wish Upon a Star." Naples itself is not much to see, except for the great museum there. However, you can visit Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri and the Amalfi Coast. You can do Pompeii on your own by walking from the port to the train that goes there.

♪♪ To get the absolute most out of our Santorini day, I've booked half a day with Dimitris. Cruise line excursions come with a steady commentary... Within minutes, you'll be powering up the switch-backs into the island as your guide narrates the drive.

I have read Rick's Cruise Port book and it seems to jive with my experiences. Stephanie, as Dina suggests, go to cruisecritics.com its the best forum for cruising information, it really is. You will be able to "talk" with people who have done your exact cruise, or are about to, and they will be able to give out specific tips and tour guide names, and whos the best taxi driver etc.. Someone can tell the local bus to take, another may share their experience with a private guide, etc. There is NO guide book as helpful as that forum for cruisers only.

I still believe that European travelers in search of engaging, enlightening experiences should eat, sleep, and live on terra firma. But cruising is more popular than ever and, for many, it’s a great choice. As my passion has long been helping independent travelers make the most of their time and money, my staff and I have written a guidebook on Mediterranean cruise ports.

We'll learn how to make the most of the cruising experience -- avoiding lines, eating quick but local -- while exercising independence to get the most out of limited time on shore. Our four days on Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Malta were filled with intensive filming. We were always among the first people off the ship and the last ones back on, 10 hours later.

By the nature of a cruise schedule, dinners are at sea. While extremely arid, the stony countryside of Mykonos -- complete with white-washed churches and staggering views -- is a delight for a quick road trip. If you prefer a quieter scene, the more remote beaches are a short drive further out. These days, tacky trinket stalls share the lanes with top-end fashion boutiques.

It divides the sea from a cruise itinerary point of view into western ports and eastern ports. And there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the sunny hours on deck. Cruise lines work hard to make time on the ship enjoyable. A favorite with cruise travelers, it's home to a fleet of typical Maltese fishing boats. A short drive through Malta's dry and timeless landscape takes us to the fisherman's harbor of Marsaxlokk. So, for lunch, rather than fast food or some forgettable sandwich, choose authentic local food designed to be eaten quickly.

[13] The land, which can seem timeless, is dotted with prehistoric ruins dating back 5,000 years. Megalithic sites like Ħaġar Qim are evidence that, in roughly 3000 BC, settlers from Sicily arrived in search of arable land. While the humble, mud-brick village that once surrounded this temple is long gone, stones from the temple still stand. Archaeologists believe this was a temple to a fertility goddess that functioned as a celestial calendar. Cruises let you sample different destinations, then decide where you’d like to return someday. You can efficiently visit several dynamically different destinations in a single week without wasting valuable hours packing, hauling your bags to the station, and sitting on a train.

Yes you do have to worry about missing the boat, but we have never had any problem. By booking a private tour it is almost always cheaper then the cruise. In addition, it is a smaller group which is more flexible and you can make up your own plans. In non Rick Steves ports we have just researched online.
